What is the difference between a baboon and an ape

It is believed that their schedule has to do with what they have readily available around them. The groups of Baboons can be very large. The smallest size of them is about 50 members. However, they can have up to members. They have a very complex level of social organization that takes place among them.

This helps them to be able to keep things from becoming chaotic. Part of that successful organization comes in the form of them being able to develop sub groups. They have mini cultures that occur inside of that larger ones. There are many dominant males and they have several females. Social activity is a big part of belonging to a Baboon family. They spend time chattering among themselves. It can sound very loud and chaotic when you hear them in their environment. Yet to them it means that there is safety, they that share bonds, and that they are well cared for.

Without such social aspects of the group they would lose their desire to thrive. There are many fights as well that can occur within such a large family. They are internal and often among the males. These males are often fighting over the females that they want to be part of their harems. Sometimes females will fight with each other too over the young or over food.

There are times when those that seem to be consistent trouble makers are forced out of the group. The decision is make to help keep the peace for the remaining members of the group. They are predominantly black, sometimes with gray on their back after 20 years of age. Orangutans are found in the tropical rain forests of only two islands in the world: Sumatra in Indonesia and Borneo in Malaysia and Indonesia.

They are the largest arboreal tree dwelling animal in the world, reaching heights of four to five feet and weights of to pounds or more. Orangutans are reddish-brown in color and some males grow white or yellow beards. Also characteristic are their bare faces with round eyes and small ears; their long, shaggy hair; long arms; and curled fingers and feet.

As the only accredited orangutan sanctuary in the country and one of a handful of accredited chimpanzee sanctuaries, the Center for Great Apes has been rescuing great apes for over 25 years. But if you ask our Bali Safari Park Rangers, they will tell you that monkeys and apes are different. How can they tell whether a macaque is a monkey, a gibbon is an ape, a lemur is neither a monkey nor an ape, or if a chimpanzee is a monkey? Fortunately, you can learn to sharpen your observation skills and look for 5 hints to help you figure out whether a primate is a monkey or an ape.

Most species of monkeys have tails. The Balinese long-tailed monkey, rhesus macaques, and African baboons have tails. One example is the Barbary macaque that lives in the cedar forests of Algeria and Morocco. So how do we know that these Barbary macaques are monkeys and not apes? We must look at their habitat.

Have you noticed that monkeys never stay on the ground for very long? Trees provide food, shelter, and protection from predators.

They can travel freely from one tree to another, but not when they are on the ground. However, some species of monkeys occupy habitat that is not dense with vegetation. For example, the Japanese macaques are very adaptable in various habitats in Japan — from subtropical forests to rocky hills and hot springs. Gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees are large primates that have broad chests and long arms. They occasionally prey on insects, fish, shellfish, hares, birds, vervet monkeys, and small antelopes.

In some areas, they have also been known to prey on sheep and goats from human settlements. They have a life expectancy of 30 years, which can extend to 45 years in captivity. Baboons are able to acquire orthographic processing skills, which form part of the ability to read. Predators for baboons include humans, the Nile Crocodile, lions, spotted and striped hyena, leopards and cheetahs.
